This workshop invites UQ students and agricultural industry members to QAAFI’s state-of-the-art plant tissue culture Facility at UQ’s Longpocket Campus – just a 10 min shuttle ride from UQ St Lucia. Here, participants will be immersed in research that is developing tissue-culture technologies to produce the crop plants we rely on for food. Learn how we can use these tools to sustainably produce plants from stem cells and how we can save plant species on the brink of extinction using cryotechnology (think Han Solo in Carbonite – but for plants!).

The first hour will comprise a lecture on these technologies with real-world examples from the team. In the second hour, participants will experience the lab in action – looking at plant stem cells under a microscope, handling plant tissue culture jars of various species, and watching as tissues are frozen for conservation. Participants will be able to prepare and take home a cutting of an Australian midgenberry plant using traditional soil-based propagation techniques.

A pizza lunch will be provided at the conclusion, and participants are welcomed to stay and talk to the team and discuss opportunities for student projects and industry partnerships.
