Using linked and merged administrative data to progress social justice: Applying a social determinants of justice framework - In-Person event
Join us for an insightful workshop led by Emeritus Professor Eileen Baldry AO, an internationally recognised leader in criminology, social policy, and justice studies. From 2017-2023, Professor Baldry served as the inaugural Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of New South Wales.
This workshop introduces and applies a "social determinants of justice" perspective to achieve social justice for disadvantaged and marginalised individuals involved with the criminal justice system. The social determinants perspective, well-established in public health, helps understand the systemic and structural drivers of poor health outcomes. This approach utilises large-linked datasets to analyse patterns, common factors, life course trajectories, and community knowledge.
Key topics include:
- Examination of the social determinants approach and its development over two decades
- Analysis of life-course pathways into criminal legal management
- Examples from Professor Baldry's research using deidentified administrative data of people with disabilities (mental health disorders, cognitive disabilities, and other disabilities) involved in the criminal legal system in NSW
- Integration of large-scale quantitative datasets with qualitative information to develop a rich understanding of pathways into and out of criminal legal systems
- Discussion on using knowledge gained for social justice outcomes
- Focus on Indigenous data sovereignty and how Indigenous communities are translating their knowledge to help their young people flourish.
This workshop is a free event sponsored through the bequest of Professor Edna Chamberlain, who was the first Professor of Social Work at UQ and the first female Professor of Social Work in Australia.
