Join us for the Chamberlain Social Justice Oration, sponsored through a bequest of Professor Edna Chamberlain to continue her legacy of evidence-informed approaches to achieving social justice outcomes. This year's speaker is Emeritus Professor Eileen Baldry AO, an internationally esteemed criminologist and social researcher in the fields of social policy, criminology, and justice. Until 2023, she served as the inaugural Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of New South Wales.

In this seminar, Professor Baldry addresses the question: Are there fairer and more equitable systemic and structural social arrangements that could create a more socially just society?

To answer this question, Professor Baldry will outline a "social determinants of justice" approach to understanding and addressing the social structural drivers leading to the over-representation of disadvantaged and marginalised people cycling in and out of juvenile, police, and corrections systems. Drawing on her analysis of government administrative data-sets, Professor Baldry will identify and discuss the social factors increasing a person's likelihood of incarceration. She will demonstrate that the more of these factors experienced, the more likely a person is to be incarcerated and re-incarcerated. Practical applications of a social determinants framework for disrupting the pathways that keep people vulnerable to criminalisation, such as disadvantaged young people with cognitive disabilities, in criminal legal systems, will be explored.

Emeritus Professor Ross Homel AO will join Emeritus Professor Baldry as a discussant for the final part of the Oration, followed by a Q&A session.

This is a free event sponsored through the bequest of Professor Edna Chamberlain, who was the first Professor of Social Work at UQ and the first female Professor of Social Work in Australia.
