Exploring and Predicting using Linear Regression in SPSS
This workshop is designed to expand participants’ understanding of statistical relationships between variables by introducing the principles and methods of linear regression using SPSS. It focuses on how to explore, analyse, and interpret data relationships through regression techniques. The session covers fundamental concepts, guiding participants from the basics of regression through to interpreting SPSS output, supported by hands-on practical sessions.
Who Should Attend
This workshop is intended for researchers from any discipline who are interested in incorporating regression analysis into their work. Although exercises will be based on data from a biological study, the concepts are widely applicable. Participants should be familiar with SPSS, as introductory SPSS skills will not be covered. A basic understanding of descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing is also expected.
Note: This is an in-person workshop held at the St Lucia campus.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the principles of linear regression methods
- Select suitable correlation or regression techniques based on data characteristics
- Conduct regression analyses using SPSS
- Evaluate the performance and validity of regression models
- Interpret and clearly communicate statistical findings
Workshop Topics
- An introduction to continuous, discontinuous, and categorical variables
- Visualising relationships between variables using appropriate graphs
- Calculating parametric and non-parametric correlations
- Performing simple and multiple linear regressions
- Recognising assumptions, potential errors, and limitations in regression analysis
