This in person event will explore the two-way relationship between artificial intelligence and the energy transition - both the role of AI in enabling more efficient, resilient, and adaptive energy systems, and the growing energy demands required to support AI technologies. A key focus will be the realistic potential for flexible demand, including how AI-driven systems and large-scale computing loads can respond to grid constraints and support more dynamic energy use. 

Co-hosted by the Energy Transition Research Network, AI Research Network, and Climate Change Research Network, the session will bring together experts across energy systems, infrastructure, and applied AI. The event will be moderated by Shazia Sadiq (data science and AI) and Adrian Panow (energy transition and decarbonisation systems), with a panel of UQ researchers focused on energy infrastructure and delivery, energy systems and policy, power systems and grid integration, and climate impacts, trust, risk perception, and public attitudes to climate and technology.  

The discussion will focus on practical system constraints and opportunities - including how AI can optimize energy networks, how energy systems must evolve to meet increasing computational demand, and the implications for emissions, and climate outcomes. It will also examine the technical and regulatory limits to flexible demand, and how trust and decision-making influence the adoption of AI-enabled energy solutions.
