Grant applications and awards FAQs

How do I find grant opportunities?

You can find funding opportunities via Pivot-RP, a repository for national and international funding opportunities. You can tailor Pivot-RP to your preferences and it can provide details for other opportunities such as conferences, collaborations and prizes.

In addition, visit the RO’s Find Funding page for information on:

  • The UQ R&I mailer, to which you can subscribe to be alerted to strategically important funding calls such as those from the ARC, NHMRC and MRFF
  • other databases and sources of funding opportunities
  • RO support for your application

How do I apply for funding at UQ?

All applications for research funding must be submitted via the RO, in line with UQ policy and procedure.

A simple guide to the application process can be found here.

Your application must, at the very least, comply with UQ policy and procedure, be appropriately priced, and be accompanied by a UQ Funding Application Certification form (FAC).

The RO will assist you with eligibility and compliance with the funder’s guidelines if received prior to 10 working days of the funder’s deadlines. Thereafter, the RO will only be able to assist with UQ compliance.

How do I find out if I can include indirect costs?

This information is typically found in the funder’s guidelines. If you can’t find this, the RO will be able to assist you and will liaise with the funder if it is not clear.

More details can be found on our Budget preparation page, or email the RO for advice.

How do I get access to previously successful applications?

The RO maintains an electronic library of successful grant proposals from previous funding years. The Library contains applications for many ARC, NHMRC and MRFF grants, as well as a variety of internal and external schemes. You can request access to relevant applications through our UQ Library of Successful Grants.

I need to make changes to my grant. How do I vary it?

Please contact the Awards team. They will be able to assist in you in determining what is needed to be able to vary your grant and whether these need to be approved (and how) by the funder.

I am an early-career researcher and have never applied for a grant before – what do I do?

Your Faculty/Institute Research Office is a wealth of guidance and support.

Further, the Applying for funding page provides a simple guide to assist you navigate the grant application process, you can then Manage your award if you successfully recieve an award of funding.

I am moving to UQ and want to bring my grants with me. How do I do this?

You will first need to contact the Research Office in your current organisation.

They will need to work with you, your current organisation, the funder and UQ to initiate a grant transfer process.

This can take a significant amount of time so we advise that you start as soon as you can.
