Overview

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) supports a wide variety of innovative research through its grants program. The following DoD agencies provide funding for research.

The office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) funds health and medical research of broad reach as well as that specifically relevant to military health. For example, amongst the largest CDMRP funded programs are the Breast Cancer Research Program and Prostate Cancer Research Program. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) promotes the science and technology programs of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. ONR has six science and technology departments that fund basic research programs, technology research programs and advanced technology demonstration programs. The six departments support efforts span from combating terrorism to oceanography and from sea warfare to life sciences.

The mission of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) is to support Air Force goals of control and maximum utilisation of air, space, and cyberspace. Through its research program, AFOSR champions basic research that expands the horizon of scientific knowledge.

Through its Broad Agency Announcement, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Army Research Office (ARO) solicits proposals for scientific research in mechanical sciences, environmental sciences, mathematics, electronics, computing science, physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials science and network science.

How to apply

International grant application submissions follow the same process as domestic competitive research grant applications - draft applications should be submitted to the Research Office at least 10 working days before the external funding body closing date accompanied by a signed UQ Funding Application Coversheet (UQ FAC) and completed UQ Costing and Pricing Tool (CPT).
