A Showcase of Indonesian Research by PhD students

The symposium “Indonesia in an Era of Global Change” was held over the Easter break at the Global Change Institute. The event was organised by UQ PhD students from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the UQ Indonesian Student Association (UQISA), and supported by the UQ Graduate School and Global Change Institute. 

The event showcased the breadth and diversity of research by Indonesian scholars at UQ, and the research of UQ scholars working in Indonesia. In addition to plenary sessions by senior UQ academics thirty-four graduate students presented on their research in the areas of health and wellbeing; conflict and Identity; climate change, environment and sustainability; and economic transformation. 

The symposium presented the considerable potential of the work of UQ researchers to advance knowledge and meet the challenges of global change. Project presentations included research on antibiotic resistance, the sustainability of the coral reef in Indonesia, advances in satellite imagery technology, and navigating regulatory regimes in the Australia, PNG and Indonesia Borderland. The event was a testament to UQ’s commitment to strengthening and deepening its research relationships with Indonesia. 

The success of the symposium has resulted in commitments from UQ and LIPI to run the event annually in either Brisbane or in Jakarta.
