Steps and Resources

For Research Focused (RF) staff at UQ, the pathway to teaching begins with exploring the Teaching Opportunities spreadsheet and UQ Programs & Courses to identify suitable roles. Following this, staff should engage in discussions with their supervisors and submit the "Expression of Interest in teaching form" along with their CV. Additionally, early engagement with Teaching@UQ and ITaLI's professional development programs is crucial for skill enhancement. The commitment to teaching is formalized through the Teaching Commitment Agreement, which requires necessary sign-offs. Finally, RF staff’s teaching performance is appraised through the APD process, and their teaching workload is recorded in Workday.

Teaching Opportunities spreadsheet & identifying courses of interest

The Teaching Opportunities spreadsheet will outline teaching opportunities listed by Schools available for the following year that align with the anticipated level of capacity and experience of a RF academic. The nature of the teaching requirements, including non-student facing responsibilities and the timing and duration of each component of the teaching will be provided.

RF staff can also submit an EOI even if there is no teaching opportunity listed that aligns with their area of expertise. It is expected that you can identify areas of coursework that are of interest to you – to learn more about UQ courses you can search or browse UQ Programs & Courses.

Expression of Interest in teaching form

RF staff interested in teaching should discuss their aspirations with their supervisor in the first instance, along with the Key Contact from their local organisational unit.

Having identified available teaching opportunities or courses of interest, the RF staff member should complete an Expression of Interest in teaching (EOI) form to be accompanied by a brief CV. The EOI form will require the staff member to indicate their areas of expertise and interest, along with any relevant experience and professional development in teaching.

Professional Development and Performance Appraisal

The School involved in the engagement of the RF staff for teaching is required to provide recognition and feedback of teaching performance informally and through the APD process.

Teaching workload allocations are to be formally recorded in Workday and the Teaching domain should be assessed in the relevant APD process. The Head of School or other School manager related to teaching management and/or performance will be involved.
