Investment in health and medical research to support emerging priorities and fill gaps in research effort.

The  International Clinical Trial Collaborations (ICTC) Program complements other Australian Government programs by providing a specific funding mechanism to increase Australian leadership of, and participation in, high quality international collaborative investigator-initiated clinical trials. Clinical trials supported under the program will improve the health outcomes of Australians by supporting decisions on whether to deliver interventions in an Australian healthcare setting. International partner funding must be demonstrated by the award of funds and funds are to support the Australian involvement in and conduct a clinical trial at one or more sites in Australia. Please note that this scheme has three rounds of application per year, however applications to this scheme are entered to a Merit list and the evaluation remains current for 3 rounds of the scheme.

Applications to this grant opportunity must propose a single, phase III clinical trial that will achieve the following outcomes:

• promote Australian involvement in international collaborative investigator-initiated clinical trials research through the establishment and co-ordination of clinical trial site/s in Australia; and
• provide high-quality evidence of the effectiveness of novel health treatments, drugs or devices in ‘usual care’ settings, which will support a decision on whether to deliver the intervention in an Australian setting.

The Emerging Priorities and Consumer Driven Research Initiative (the Initiative) forms part of the MRFF. The Australian Government has announced a total of $633 million over 10 years from 2018-19 for the Initiative. This initiative intends to enable new diagnoses, treatments and cures to those suffering from rare and debilitating conditions.

Within the Emerging Priorities and Consumer Driven Research Initiative, MRFF have announced three opportunities, in the fields of Ovarian Cancer, Endometriosis and in Mental Health Pharmacogenomics. Applications must propose projects intended to develop diagnosis and treatment in these fields, and encourages multi-disciplinary collaborative teams with a highly translational aspect to their proposed work.

The Medical Research Future Fund – Global Health Initiative aims to support research that will enhance knowledge and develop tools to combat threats to national health security posed by the regional and global challenges of antimicrobial resistance and drug resistant tuberculosis through international research collaboration.
